Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question before your visit? These quick answers can help you plan with confidence. Give us a call if you need anything else.

What insurance do you take?

Accepted plans include VSP, CEC (Community Eye Care), Davis Vision, Envolve, EyeMed, Spectera, Superior Vision, Avesis, Always Vision/Unum, and NVA. Don’t see your insurance listed? Call us and we will verify benefits and provide an estimate based on the information available at the time of scheduling.

How does the eye see?

Light passes through the cornea, pupil, and crystalline lens before traveling through the vitreous to reach the retina. The retina and macula convert light into nerve signals that travel along the optic nerve to the brain, where the images you see are formed.

Why get an annual eye exam?

Routine eye exams safeguard long-term vision by detecting issues before symptoms appear. Comprehensive testing may include dilation, retinal photos, external imagery, or visual field screenings, and can reveal signs of systemic conditions like diabetes or hypertension.

Yearly visits are especially important for children, contact lens wearers, and anyone managing chronic health concerns so vision stays clear and eye health stays on track.

What is dilation?

Dilation uses eyedrops to widen the pupils so the doctor can examine the full retina and optic nerve. It relaxes eye muscles for more accurate pediatric refractions and works hand-in-hand with digital retinal photos and visual field testing to monitor eye health.

Visual field screenings measure central and peripheral awareness to uncover signs of glaucoma or neurological changes long before they impact day-to-day sight.

What does a contact lens exam cover?

A contact lens visit includes a glasses prescription, contact lens evaluation, trial lenses for soft contacts, and a starter kit. Follow-up appointments may be needed for new wearers. Options range from daily disposables and toric lenses to multifocals and specialty fits, and must be paired with a comprehensive eye exam.

What does 20/20 vision mean?

The term describes the ability to read a standardized letter size at 20 feet. It reflects how the eye and brain interpret light and is simply a benchmark for visual clarity with or without corrective lenses.

What is legal blindness?

Legal blindness means best-corrected vision remains 20/200 or worse in the better eye, or that peripheral vision is limited to 20 degrees or less. Regular exams help identify changes early and preserve remaining sight.

What is a refraction?

Refraction determines the precise eyeglass prescription by measuring nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Understanding the results can clarify many common vision concerns:

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia): Clear up close, blurry at distance.
  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia): Clear far away, strained up close.
  • Astigmatism: An uneven corneal or lens curve that blurs vision at all ranges and may cause eye strain or headaches.
  • Keratoconus: Thinning corneal tissue creates a cone shape that can reduce vision even with glasses; specialty lenses may be required.
  • Presbyopia: Age-related loss of focusing flexibility, making near tasks more difficult without magnification.

Which eye conditions do you monitor?

  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye): Reduced vision because the eye and brain are not working together.
  • Strabismus: Misalignment of the eyes caused by muscles that do not coordinate properly.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome: Tear imbalance or eyelid issues that leave the surface irritated.
  • Blepharitis: Inflamed eyelids that can lead to debris, itchiness, and dryness.
  • Cataracts: Clouding of the natural lens that gradually dims vision.
  • Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Contagious inflammation of the conjunctiva from infection, allergens, or irritants.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy (DR): Diabetes can weaken retinal vessels, allowing fluid or blood to leak. Early (nonproliferative) DR may show no symptoms, while advanced stages can cause cloudy or distorted vision, blind spots, floaters, or double vision. Annual dilated exams and blood sugar control are key to preserving sight.
  • Glaucoma: Optic nerve damage from elevated eye pressure that stealthily steals peripheral vision.
  • Macular Degeneration: Deterioration of central vision due to macular changes.
  • Flashes & Floaters: Usually harmless vitreous changes, but sudden increases can signal retinal concerns requiring urgent care.

How can I make an appointment?

Same-day appointments are often available. Call or email our office, and we will work to find a time that fits your schedule.

Do I need a Sam’s Club membership for an exam?

No membership is required. We are adjacent to Sam’s Club, but eye care services are open to everyone.

What should I bring to the eye exam?

Please bring your insurance details, current glasses or contact lenses, lens boxes or prescriptions, and any medications or eyedrops you use. Let us know about specific concerns so we can tailor your visit.
